Research Overview

  • Dr. Michael Abel is a board-certified general and colorectal surgeon, specializing in the treatment of colon and rectal cancers, and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. He provides state-of-the-art surgical care in a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • He is a Principal Investigator for clinical studies of new approaches to the surgical treatment of GI cancers, anal fissures, and bowel diseases.
  • Dr. Abel presents nationally on the healthcare system, and new means to integrate healthcare through emerging technologies.
  • As a clinician and surgeon, Dr. Abel collaborates with healthcare experts within Sutter Health to advance treatments for colorectal cancer. He is a Physician Lead in CPMCRI’s Cancer Avatar Project.


Dr. Abel received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University. He completed residency training in surgery at the Naval Regional Medical Center Oakland, a UCSF-affiliated program, and a fellowship at Cook County Hospital.
